Summary

After such a long time of waiting for the return of HBO’sThe Last of Us,it’s almost unfathomable that season 2 is already halfway over. With only seven episodes compared to season 1’s nine episodes, the horror of the post-apocalypse is going far too quickly for most fans. However, in the show’s last four intense installments, viewers got to witness some of the best and some of the worst aspects of Naughty Dog’s sequel. Certainly, saying goodbye to Joel has topped most followers' sad lists, which was quickly followed up by Abby taking the number one spot for most hated character, but one good thing that has happened inThe Last of Usseason 2 is Ellie and Dina’s blossoming relationship.

In episode 4 ofThe Last of Us, Ellie and Dina arrive in a decaying Seattle as the pair search for Abby and the WLF in a bid to avenge Joel’s death. Of course, that wouldn’t be an easy task, as not only did they encounter a massive, terrifying horde of infected runners in the subway, but the couple alsocame into close contact with FEDRA. Thankfully, episode 4 did see some nicer moments than the savage infected and people hanging from the ceiling with their guts hanging out. After Dina revealed that she was pregnant, the pair slept together, and upon waking up the next morning, Ellie made a silly tongue-in-cheek joke to Dina that some people, unsurprisingly, took far too seriously.

Last of Us Fans Shocked at How Ellie’s Silly Humor Isn’t So Obvious for Some Viewers

InThe Last of UsSeason 2, Episode 4, Ellie reveals the truth to Dina that she is immune to the Cordyceps fungus after allowing an infected to chow down on her arm. After going through a ton of emotions and even willing to shoot Ellie herself, thinking that she was now infected, Dina also has her own news and reveals she is pregnant. While the reality of the unexpected news hits Ellie with shock in the same way it does in the game, what she says is very different. Instead of telling Dina that she’s a burden, the pair get intimate, and the next morning, Ellie expresses to Dina, “I’m gonna be a dad.”

Now it seems as though quite a few people didn’t understand Ellie’s joke, with some calling her response disrespectful towards Jesse and how strange it was. On Reddit, fans ofThe Last of Ushave been calling out those who have seemingly taken the silly off-the-cuff comeback as a genuine response, rather than acknowledging thatEllie has always made awkward and out-of-place quipsthroughout the series, as well as the game. “I’ve seen a bunch of people (mostly in that one server) raging about this line as if it’s not the most obvious ‘goofy girl makes dumb joke in tense situation’ bit of all time. No chat, Ellie doesn’t actually think she’s a dad now,” postedLintyTheGoblin.

“It was wonderfully dorky, and bad dad jokes are already her thing. Let them enjoy what levity they can find in this situation; they both deserve it.”

“There are multiple episodes of Ellie reading from a dumb joke book when things get tough, and also getting a dumb joke book as a gift. Yet, people can’t understand that she deals with everything sarcastically and with jokes,” said a commenter in the thread’s replies, with another stating, “At this point, I think some people just want something to hate on from the show.” It certainly seems likeThe Last of Us, in general, can’t catch a break. If it’s not Bella looking nothing like the video game Ellie, then it’sKaitlyn not being muscular likeThe Last of Us Part 2’s Abby, even though the character was relentlessly hounded for her “too manly” physique.

Regardless, for many players, episode 4 ofThe Last of Uswas almost like playing the game again. Not only did lovers of Naughty Dog’s sequel get to see the horrific subway scene and the beautifully overgrown scope of Seattle as Ellie and Dina rode into the city, but they also got that iconic moment between the pair in the music store. Here’s hoping the rest of season 2 has even more video-gamey references for fans to scream at their TVs over.

The Last of UsSeason 2 streams on Max, with new episodes dropping every Sunday.
