Summary
The Last of Usis a show about an infection taking over the world and turning people into zombies. However, the show is also about how cities survive the apocalypse. If the first season was all about how FEDRA was trying to save the people by restricting them to one place, the second season shows how Seattle is dealing with the apocalypse. InThe Last of UsSeason 2, Ellie and Dina wander through the streets of Seattle to find Abby and the group that killed Joel. While viewers learned how the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) is claiming Seattle as its own, the organization is fighting a war with a religious group claiming that the WLF is evil.
In between all of this, Season 2 also gave audiences a beautiful moment between Ellie and Dina where they confessed their love for each other. However, Ellie knows that the news of Dina being pregnant changes a lot of things for her as well. Ellie believes Dina’s well-being is her responsibility because she can’t lose another loved one. A lot of things change, but Dina and Ellie are not backing down as they continue to avenge Joel’s death. But what is the plan? How would Ellie and Dina move ahead to the Lakehill hospital, where they could find Abby and her group? Let’s take a look at what happened in the fifth episode ofThe Last of UsSeason 2.
WLF Soldiers Encounter a New Variation of the Infected
Theepisode begins with Hanharangoing to look at something and entering a hall full of soldiers. She sees a basement door that has been locked and bolted from the ground. She leaves the hall and enters a cabin in which Sergeant Elise Park is waiting to be interrogated about something disastrous that happened in the basement. Hanharan asks her what happened and why she lost so many of her men.
Park said that she and her team were responsible for securing the hospital. They cleared the ground floor up to the sixth, during which they encountered a few infected. However, they handled the situation without any difficulty. After that, they moved to the basements (B1, B2, and B3). They knew that the team could face some serious difficulties there, because that’s the kind of environment that the infected like the most. Moreover, she noted that this was the place where the first people infected with the Cordyceps fungus were brought in 2003. But they were facing difficulties in sending teams down there because it wasn’t easy for them to have access to these floors. As a result, Sergeant Park sent a team into the basement through a stairwell that was still operational and was not caved in.
The team, which included a soldier named Leon, searched B1 and B2. On B2, they found Cordyceps on the walls and floors. They knew they would find infected in B3, and still proceeded to search the last floor. Five minutes later, Leon, while struggling to breathe, tells Park on the radio that there’s an infection in the air, and he wants the team to be sealed inside the basement. Park said that she knew that the infection was not in the vents, because if that were the case, everyone would have been infected by now. As a result, they locked the only entries to B1 and B2. Hanharan told Park that she had dealt with the situation heroically and apologized for the loss she endured. In the end, it is revealed that Leon was Sergeant Park’s son.
Ellie Wants Dina To Go Back, While Dina Tells a Terrifying Childhood Story
Meanwhile, Dina is trying to learn about themovements of the WLF soldiersso that they can find a way to reach the hospital building where they’ll be able to find Joel’s killers. Right before they were ambushed by the infected, Dina and Ellie managed to take one of the walkies that was being used by the WLF. Dina is using that walkie to find out where they are stationed. Ellie believes that WLF is playing it too safe by openly talking about where they are and their movements. However, Dina believes that the main reason for them to talk so openly is that they are fighting an enemy that doesn’t use this advanced technology. She’s talking about the Scars, who use bows and arrows at a time when advanced weaponry was available.
They start discussing how they could reach the hospital building and reach Abby and her group. Dina tells Ellie that the WLF soldiers patrol from north to south, but there’s an area that they don’t, which leads to a “big f****ng building.” Ellie realizes that the WLF doesn’t come close to that building because of the infected. If they manage to cut through that area and that building, they could reach the hospital, where they’ll find Nora (Tati Gabrielle) on the first floor. Ellie and Dina know their plan is reckless, but they have to do this if they want to avenge Joel’s death. On their way, they come across the lifeless bodies of a few Scars, which makes Ellie nervous.
Dina doesn’t stop, and tells Ellie about the first person she killed. She was 8 years old, and her mother never wanted to let her play outside because of the apocalypse. But one day, she went out anyway with a gun in her hand. When she returned, one of the raiders killed her mother and sister, and was still inside the house. At 8 years of age, she killed the raider. WhenEllie asks how Dinamade her way to Jackson, Dina stops her and says that if she hadn’t snuck out, she could have witnessed the death of her mother and sister in front of her eyes. But would it have mattered if her family had hurt his people first? Dina makes it clear that if she hadn’t killed the raider that day, she would have hunted him forever. Dina ends the conversation by saying that Ellie could go from there or continue with her. If she dies, it would be on her, not Ellie. Ellie agrees to move ahead.
Ellie and Dina Are Saved by [Spoiler] and Encounter the Scars
Ellie and Dina attempt to infiltrate the building at night. As soon as they enter the building, Dina says that the plan is to use knives or run if things get crazy, before confessing that she loves Ellie. Ellie nods and agrees to the plan as they enter a big hall of the building. Things escalate when they see an infected and try to deal with it. The infected they saw was similar to what Ellie confronted in Jackson, a smarter one who knows how to deceive.
They find out that there are multiple infected in the hall, and they need to think of a plan. Ellie tells Dina that she will lure them to her, and Dina should run to the nearest door and lock herself inside. At first, it feels like Ellie and Dina might get away with it, but the infected get the better of them, and it seemed that there might be a casualty. But someone comes and saves them.
A few moments later, it is revealed that Jesse is the one who came to save them and get them out of that building. A few WLF soldiers tried to kill them, but the trio entered a park that WLF soldiers didn’t enter. Ellie asks Jesse if he is alone, to which Jesse says that Tommy is with him, and they decide to split up. While going through the park, they encounter Scars brutally killing one of the WLF soldiers. Eventually, they get discovered, and Dina is struck by an arrow. Ellie, once again, lures theScars or Seraphitesto her and manages to hide inside a tree. Meanwhile, Jesse takes Dina to the theater that Ellie and Dina were previously in. When Ellie comes out of the tree, she sees that she is near the Lakehill Hospital. Without thinking twice, she enters the hospital, without telling Dina.
Did Ellie Finally Begin Her Redemption By Killing [Spoiler]?
In the ending moments of the episode, Ellie enters the hospital building and finds Nora. Nora tries to make Ellie angry by saying how they killed Joel in front of her eyes and how he deserved the brutal death. She manages to escape and tell a couple of WLF soldiers to kill Ellie, but they can’t, and Ellie follows Nora to the basement.
As soon as she enters the basement, Ellie sees the Cordyceps infection all over the walls and on the floor. She looks at people stuck to the walls, covered by the Cordyceps. One of them is exhaling spores. Ellie finds Nora on the ground, and she tells Ellie that they are inhaling spores and will be killed in minutes. Ellie seems to be unfazed, and Nora realizes that Ellie is immune to the infection. She tells Ellie that Joel killed the person who could have created a cure: Abby’s father.
The episode concludes with Ellie asking Nora about Abby’s whereabouts. When she doesn’t tell her, Ellie hits her with a metal rod multiple times. After the black screen, viewers see Ellie waking from sleep and see Joel in front of her.
The fifth episode ofThe Last of UsSeason 2is a visceral, emotionally complex, and thematically rich installment that balances post-apocalyptic horror with deeply personal stakes. Dina’s heart-wrenching confession and the dynamic with Jesse add layers of emotional urgency and complication to the group’s journey. With well-paced action, gripping emotional scenes, and a chilling final sequence that brings Ellie face-to-face with the consequences of Joel’s actions, the episode sets a powerful stage for the second half of the season. It’s a reminder thatThe Last of Usis not just about survival; it’s about legacy, trauma, and the difficult choices made in a broken world.
