The finale featured three brutal deaths that left a lasting impact and were important for the narrative. But who died, and how were they killed? Let’s take a look at who died in the season finale ofThe Last of Us.
Here Are The Characters That Died InThe Last of UsSeason 2 Finale
Owen Moore
In the second season ofThe Last of Us,viewers didn’t see many of Abby’s friends. People got a glimpse of them in the first and second episodes of this edition, but after that, their stories took a backseat, and the season solely focused onEllie. However, the finale saw Owen (played by Spencer Lord) making an appearance and coming face-to-face with Ellie.
Ellie made her way to the Seattle Aquarium to find Abby. After searching through certain areas of the aquarium, she finally made a breakthrough when she saw an open door, which led to an area that looked like a hall. With a gun in her hands, she entered the hall andfound Owen and Melarguing about WLF’s attack on the village of the Seraphites. Ellie didn’t waste much time interrupting their conversation and asking about Abby’s whereabouts. Owen told Ellie that she wouldn’t want to pull the trigger and kill them, but Ellie didn’t back down and told them to pinpoint on the map where Abby was. The duo was reluctant to give her any kind of information, which forced Ellie to count to five. If they didn’t give her any info, she’d shoot and kill them right then and there.
Ellie started counting, and when she came closer to one, Owen told Mel that Ellie would kill them even if they told her about Abby. To which, Ellie said that she wouldn’t kill them if they gave her the information because she is not like them. As a result, Owen says he’ll tell her about Abby. However, instead of giving her the info, Owen went for his gun, prompting Ellie to shoot him right in his neck and kill them instantly. Owen’s death in the HBO series is slightly different than what gamers saw inThe Last of Us Part II.In the game, Ellie punches Owen after he tries to disarm Ellie. However, Ellie punches him and then shoots him right in the chest. But Owen wasn’t the only one who died in that particular moment.
Mel
When Ellie saw Mel and Owen talking to each other, Mel (played by Ariela Barer) was telling Owen that she didn’t want to be on the front line of this war. Moreover, she doesn’t want him to go with the WLF soldiers either. Mel is shocked to see Ellie at the aquarium and wants to tell her about Abby. However, Owen didn’t let her talk and gave her the impression that she would kill them even if the information was revealed to her. When Owen tried to grab his gun, Ellie shot him in the neck, and that same bullet pierced through Mel’s neck, killing her slowly. However, before dying, Mel reveals that she was pregnant and wanted Ellie to cut her stomach open. Ellie was too stunned to do anything, and before she could do anything, Mel died.
Mel’s death affected Ellie, and she couldn’t stop crying afterward. But just like Owen’s death, Mel’s death on the show was not similar to the game. In the game, when Ellie shoots Owen in the chest, Mel grabs a knife and tries to attack Ellie. However, she was overpowered and stabbed in the neck. Moreover, it is not Mel who reveals that she is pregnant; it is Owen who tells Ellie that Mel was pregnant with his child before he took his last breath.
Now, Abby has lost two of her friends, and she is nowhere to be seen. Things might get ugly for Ellie from here on.
Jesse
Yes, the devastating moment finally arrived, and Ellie saw one of her closest friends die in front of her eyes. After killing Owen and Mel, Tommy andJesse (played by Young Mazino)came to rescue Ellie. They took her back to the theater, where Dina was waiting for them. Ellie, Tommy, and Jesse were talking about their next course of action. Ellie didn’t know where Abby was and reluctantly said yes to going back to Jackson. Tommy left Jesse and Ellie alone so that they could talk to each other. They told each other how they care for each other and would do anything to protect each other.
But the sweet moment doesn’t last long. They hear gunshots from another part of the theater. When Jesse opens the door to check, he’s shot right in the head and killed right away. Ellie hides, but then a woman’s voice calls out, warning her to come out, or she’ll kill Tommy too. Without any guesses, Abby had found them and held Tommy at gunpoint. As soon as Ellie steps out, she sees that it’s Abby who found them. Abby recognizes Ellie and says she made a big mistake by letting her live the day she killed Joel. Then, the screen goes black as Abby pulls the trigger.
