Kaiju No. 8: The Game Is A Comprehensive New Way To Experience The Anime

Kaiju No. 8: The Gameis a Kaiju-Slaying battle RPG, where players channel the power of the Japan Defense Force to go up against monstrous Kaiju who threaten the city and the lives of civilians. The game appears to only feature a few characters from the series for now, although the developer could well have plans to expand the roster in the future.

Hibino Kafka, the Kaiju No. 8, leads the line with Mina Ashiro and Soshiro Hoshina (the Captain and Vice Captain duo) also making their way into the game alongside Isao Shinomiya, the Director General of the Japan Defense Force. Star rookies Reno Ichikawa and Kikoru Shinomiya are also included in the cast due to their status as some of the best Kaiju slayers in the universe.

Kaiju No. 8: The Game Won’t Skimp on Story Modes

The story aspect ofKaiju No. 8: The Gameis another highlight that fans can look forward to, as the game will feature three distinct Story Modes. In addition to allowing players to relive the events of the source material in the Memories section, the team at Akatsuki Games (in cooperation with TOHO Co. and Production I.G) is working to create an original Main Story set in the universe. However, the plot direction the developers intend to take with this original story is still unknown.

To further develop the plot, a Character Stories section sheds light on the backgrounds and motivations ofeach Defense Force officer in the game. The stories are told through high-fidelity 3D sequences akin to anime visual novels. High-fidelity graphics seem to be a conscious choice for the developer, ranging from the detailed character and Kaiju models to special attacks.

How Kaiju No. 8: The Game Translates the Anime Into Gameplay

At its heart, in terms of gameplay mechanics,Kaiju No. 8: The Gameis a strategy command battle that leverages simple controls. Set up with co-op party dynamics, players can form a four-person squad to neutralize Kaiju. Akatsuki Games aims to provide a cooperative atmosphere for players to experience battle together using specialized skillsets presented in a turn-based format.

In addition to the turn-based combat, players can expect a robust progression system for each character. Players can level up their favorite characters and boost their stats (HP, ATK, DEF, and SPD) with cap break, Ascension, and skill enhancement. Beyond leveling, synergies between Defense Force officers in a party can also be exploited through special attacks and combinations. These power-ups are unique to specific character lineups and help totake down Kaiju in an easier mannerby triggering follow-up attacks.

While there is no definite release date, a pre-registration campaign is currently underway. In-game rewards are up for grabs based on the number of pre-registrations received, withCaptain Mina Ashirobeing one of the higher-tier rewards. When the development process is complete,Kaiju No. 8: The Gamewill release on iOS, Android, and Steam, and is free-to-play.
