Ever since 343 Industries and Xbox Game Studios releasedHalo: The Master Chief Collectionin 2014, fans of Xbox’s second most popular exclusive games franchise,Gears of War, have called for Xbox to release a similar compilation for the third-person shooter series. Based onHalo: MCCinitially encompassing only games with Master Chief as the protagonist,Gears of Warfans pitched their compilation game to be titledGears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection. While The Coalition has remadeGears of War 1into 2015’sGears of War: Ultimate Editionand the upcomingGears of War: Reloaded, there’s still a lot of potential for aMarcus Fenix Collectionto debut in the near future.

The History of Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection Rumors

Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collectionhas never been officially announced or even given an official title. While fans began to speculate about the potential release of a remastered compilation of theGears of Waroriginal trilogy, especially aroundGears of War 2and3’s 10th anniversariesin 2018 and 2021, The Coalition or Xbox have never made official remarks on aGears of Warcompilation title. Instead, The Coalition continued moving forward in developingGears of Warsequels and spin-offs in the form of 2016’sGears of War 4, 2019’sGears Pop!andGears 5, and 2020’sGears Tactics.

However, in the five years sinceGears Tactics’ debut, rumors of The Coalition developing a compilation of the originalGears of Wartrilogy began to appear frequently. In 2022, Xbox Era podcast host Nick Baker and The Verge’s Tom Warren hinted that aGears of Warcompilation would soon be released. Baker later affirmed in 2023 that moreGearsremasters were in the works but didn’t reveal his sources or further details. In early 2025, Head of Microsoft GamingPhil Spencer began playingGears of War 2and3prompting many fans to speculate this was leading to announcements of the games’ remasters. Spencer later explained that he was simply showing off the games to a friend who had never playedGears.

PlayStation 5 Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection Rumors

In recent years, Microsoft has begun slowly porting over its most exclusive franchises to rival PlayStation platforms, such asForza Horizon 5being released on the PlayStation 5 in late April 2025. This trend was seemingly expected to continue when leakers and industry insiders extas1s and DetectiveSeeds suggested thata remastered collection of the originalGears of Wartrilogywould be announced at the June 2025 Xbox Games Showcase for both Xbox and PlayStation platforms. However, this rumored collection would reportedly not include any PVP multiplayer.Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collectioncould still possibly be announced at the upcoming showcase, but if their details are right, it’s likely extas1s and DetectiveSeeds’ information was about the recently announcedGears of War: Reloadedfor PS5 instead.

The Coalition did briefly work on a remaster ofGears of War 2around 2015, according to 3D models for the Riftworm’s interior created by environmental artist Ayi Sanchez, but the project was canceled to focus more on multiplayer development.

How a Gears of War: The Marcus Fenix Collection Could Work

In light of the recent announcement and upcomingrelease ofGears of War: Reloadedin Augustfor Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, aMarcus Fenix Collectionmay not release this year, if it’s in development at all. WithGears of War: E-Dayexpected to be the nextGearsgame to release afterReloaded, likely in late 2025 or sometime in 2026, aMarcus Fenix Collectioncould possibly be released afterE-Day. If bothReloadedandE-Daysell well on Xbox and PlayStation platforms, this could motivate Microsoft to greenlight The Coalition and possibly another developer to begin working on remasteringGears of War 2and3for a compilation to catch PlayStation and PC players up in the series.

UsingHalo: The Master Chief Collectionas a reference, aMarcus Fenix Collectioncould feature both remastered campaigns and multiplayers ofGears of War 1,2, and3, complete with all DLC and potentially new lore content akin toHalo’s terminals. Each game’s multiplayer progression could be updated and streamlined to unlock cosmetics for all three games and The Coalition could potentially release new character and weapon skins for multiplayer similar toHalo: MCC’s Fractures armor. If theMarcus Fenix Collectionis released on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, it could also feature seamless multiplayer crossplay between platforms, allowing for friends to easily play together no matter what system they own.

Marcus Fenix does appear in those three games and all three are getting old enough to earn a slight remaster at least, withJudgment12 years old,4being nine years old, and5being six years old.
