Oblivion Remastereddrew over 4 million players just days after it was released. Many of those players are long-time fans of the series, while others played it for the first time in 2025. Like any other game inThe Elder Scrolls,Oblivion Remastered’s main questline can be done in the player’s own time, and can even be put off indefinitely. Doing so can, however, have unexpected consequences.
One of the first early quests inOblivion Remastered’s main questline is Find the Heir, which leads into Breaking the Siege of Kvatch. This quest in particular requires careful timing, as it fundamentally changes much ofOblivion’s world state, and its difficulty and enemies change significantly based on what level the player attempts it. Once Find the Heir is completed, Oblivion gates will begin opening in Cyrodiil, which is another consideration the player must make before attempting Kvatch.
Triggering Find the Heir and the Siege of Kvatch
Find the Heir is acquired afterdelivering the Amulet of Kings to Jauffrein Weynon Priory. Jauffre reveals the location and name of the last living Septim, Martin, who is a priest living in Kvatch. Upon arrival in Kvatch, it’s shown that the city is under a massive daedra invasion, with most of the city completely destroyed and most of its inhabitants dead in their attempt to find Martin. What’s left of Kvatch’s City Watch rallies with the player to close the Great Oblivion Gate, kill the daedra, and rescue any survivors. Matin is found in the chapel, and agrees to accompany the player back to Weynon Priory.
Find the Heir is very early on inOblivion’s main questline, so players tend to encounter it very early or very late, depending on if they’ve been avoiding the main questline. The reason behind these different experiences isOblivion’s enemy scaling system and how it’s linked to the player character’s level. Players with a level between 1-10 will encounter low-level daedra such as scamps and clannfear, while players at higher levels will encounter far more difficult enemies such as daedroth, atronachs, and high-level clannfear.
The Pros and Cons of Doing Kvatch at Higher or Lower Levels
Surviving encounters such as this is difficult enough on its own, butBreaking the Siege of Kvatchalso includes a group of allied Kvatch guardsmen and three members of the Imperial Watch who heroically join the battle after seeing the smoke from the road. Unlike the enemies, these characters don’t scale with the Hero. While they can handle the daedra army at lower levels, it’s harder to keep them alive at Level 15 onwards, with a high likelihood that only one or two will survive.
However, those who want a more cinematic and lore-friendly experience could consider starting Find the Heir at a higher level. TheSiege of Kvatch is a pivotal moment in Tamriel’s history, and ensuring the most brutal of daedra raze Cyrodiil’s largest city outside the capital creates a more dire tone and message. While the quest is easier to complete at lower levels, and is more likely to result in a happy ending with everyone in the guard surviving, seeing the city besieged by nothing but low-level scamps isn’t quite the massive invasion described by history.
Another consideration is the opening of Oblivion gates across Cyrodiil. As they’re only supposed to open after Find the Heir is completed, players who don’t want to deal with them while they do faction and side quests should consider either waiting, or finishing the main questline in one go.
