Joining a new “Game Preview” beta program, the hit magical deck-building MMORPGWizard101is now available on Xbox consoles.Wizard101was previously a PC exclusive but has suddenly made its way to Xbox systems in an unexpected way.

Originally launched back in 2008,Wizard101sees players taking on the role of a young student at the Ravenwood School, where they study elemental magic through the use of deck building. The player must master their witchcraft by defeating various enemies across the unique realms of the Spiral, all in an effort to stop the nefarious plot of the evil wizard Malistaire. Similar to othermassively multiplayer online role-playing games,Wizard101has a small free-to-play portion of the game, but most of the title’s content must be purchased. Fans just wanting to dip their toes into the fantasy tale can now try the game out for free courtesy of a new Xbox program.

TheXbox Storeis currently offering a Game Preview of KingsIsle Entertainment’sWizard101, which is described as a “work in progress” that “may or may not change over time.” Xbox is testing out a new preview beta program that allows players to try out various games without buying the full game, similar to Game Pass, but with limited access to the available titles. KingsIsle Entertainment previously stated thatWizard101would not be joining Game Pass, so audiences were pleasantly surprised to see the game pop up on the Xbox Store. According to the Xbox Store page, the full version of the game is not currently available, but the preview has the potential to transition into a full release in the future. TheWizard101Game Preview is available for free for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S systems.

Is the Xbox Version of Wizard101 the Same as the PC Version?

Just like the PC version ofWizard101, the Xbox Game Preview will also be free to play, though the scope of how much content will be available has not been revealed. Additionally, the Xbox version ofWizard101will also feature microtransactions with the option to purchase Crowns, a unique in-game currency that unlocks powerful items, cards, mounts, pets, cosmetics, and more. Whilemicrotransactions in FTP gameshave faced criticism over the years, players are able to complete the full version ofWizard101without the use of these additional purchases, with aWizard101subscription being the only necessary transaction for game completion. Xbox players can try the freeWizard101Game Preview and have the option to purchase the game in its “current state.”

Wizard101continues to boast a dedicated PC player base years after launch and is even slated to receive a prequel game with thevisual novelRavenwood Academy: A Wizard101 Story.
