Summary
World of Warcraftrecently confirmed a new horror-themed independent game mode is in development. Few details are currently available, butWorld of Warcraftfans can expect this “scary story” game mode to be played within the game client like Plunderstorm, though it will not just be another battle royale.
Plunderstorm is a piratical game mode Blizzard ran in March 2024, and again in January 2025, in which fans battle for supremacy in a 60-player battle royale in theArathi Highlands ofWorld of Warcraft. One of the things that made Plunderstorm special was the fact it was a separate game mode accessed within theWorld of Warcraftgame client, but independently of one’s normal characters.
Now,World of Warcraftis working on another independent game mode that will be coming to the game in the future. During PAX East,WoWassociate game director Jeremy Feasel introduced this project, and though little information was shared about it, he did tease two important details: it will have a “scary stories” theme, and it will not be a battle royale like Plunderstorm. There is no timetable for when this mysterious game mode will arrive, but fans can expect to learn more in a full reveal featuring “cool videos that get across everything we’re trying to do here” in the future.
Horror Game Mode Coming to World of Warcraft
Notably, the image Feasel shared along with this teaser showed an image of Darkshire. The cursed town is in the middle of the haunted zone of Duskwood, a zone wherelevel 17 to 26 Alliance players often find themselves inClassic WoW. With werewolf-like Worgen, secret necromancers and cultists, and both restless dead and ravenous beasts, this region most certainly fits the horror vibes that Feasel mentioned.
Unsurprisingly, fans were excited about this game mode, and immediately started theorizing what they hoped it would be. Some surmised it could be a deception-based game likeAmong Us, or perhaps a survivor escape game likeDead by Daylight. Others wondered if it might beWorld of Warcraft’s take onVampire Survivors, given the datamined files from a couple of years back that suggested such a game mode.
Either way, this won’t be the only new game modeWorld of Warcraftplayers can look forward to soon. During the same panel, Feasel also confirmedWorld of Warcraft: Legion Remixis coming, featuring endless Mythic+ dungeon progression and the Shattered Timeline open-world challenge mode. Fans can expect to hear more about this event ahead of its expected launch later this year.
